When I open a Word document I see an error message saying that the document is associated with another add-in. What do I do?

Answer

If you have opened or created a document whilst logged into Legacy (old) RefWorks on Write-and-Cite and then try and change to New RefWorks you will receive this message. It will also appear if you move from New to Legacy.

To resolve this, save a copy of your document, logout of Write-N-Cite, close Word, and update to the latest version of Write-N-Cite (uninstall Write-N-Cite and re-download it). When you open your document log in to your New RefWorks account and a message should appear asking you if you wish to upgrade your document. Follow the instructions to upgrade the references to New RefWorks.

You cannot start using the new RefWorks Citation Manager if you have started writing a document using Write-N-Cite. If you upgrade to New RefWorks, follow the instructions above to update your references to the New RefWorks format and then complete the document using Write-N-Cite. Once you start a new document you can begin using RefWorks Citation Manager instead of Write-N-Cite (See the RefWorks Guide Linking RefWorks to Word (Windows 7/8/10) for more information on the ways you can use RefWorks with Word)
