How do I remove the 'field codes' from a paper so I can submit it to a publisher?

Answer

If you are using RefWorks to write a paper that you wish to submit to a journal or for a book then the publisher may ask you to remove the field codes before you submit it. This is because the editing process of the journal or book publishers can interfere with the RefWorks code used to link your citations.

Before you do this, make sure you have saved a back-up copy of your paper.

If you are using Write-N-Cite there is a button on the toolbar that says 'remove field codes'. You can't re-add these so make sure you don't need to add any more citations before you do this.

If you are using RefWorks Citation Manager there is no way to remove the field codes as it uses different technology. RefWorks recommend you save a back-up copy of your paper and send this to the publishers. If the publishers apply formatting to the paper that causes problems with RefWorks Citation Manager but then send it back for revisions you can use your other copy of the paper to make the required changes.
