How can I be more critical in my assignments?

I've been told I'm not being critical enough by my tutor - what can I do?

Answer

Assignment feedback often includes statements such as;

  • Your writing is too descriptive

  • You need a clearer structure

  • There is a lack of clarity in your ideas

  • You need to be more critical

  • You need to support your ideas with academic evidence

  • You are not being analytical enough.

It can be difficult to work out how to change our writing to improve. Or what this feedback is asking us to do differently. You can have a look at the section on understanding your feedback to see how to act on the advice.

Have a look at the critical thinking toolkit which has advice on how to think critically in the different stages of writing your assignment from finding information to writing.

 When drafting academic writing it is possible to use different styles of writing to do different jobs, this is sometimes called a voice.
