What are the file/system requirements for submitting to Turnitin?

Information about Turnitin file size and file requirements

Answer

File size

  • Submitted documents cannot exceed 100MB,
  • Submitted files must contain at least 20 words
  • and be less than 800 pages in length.

Turnitin accepts the following file types for upload into an assignment (but we strongly recommend using .PDF or .docx)

  • Adobe (.PDF)
  • Microsoft Word (.doc and .docx)
  • Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt, .pptx, .ppsx, .pps)
  • Microsoft Excel (.xls and .xlsx)
  • HTML Adobe PostScript (.ps)
  • Plain text (.txt) (do not exceed 2MB)
  • Rich Text Format (.rtf)
  • OpenOffice Text (.odt)
  • WordPerfect (.wpd)
  • Hangul Word Processor File (.hwp)

Apple Pages is not an acceptable file type for Turnitin submissions. Please save your Pages document as a PDF or Word document.

Text saved as images is unacceptable.

If you have any images in your assignment submission, this can increase your file size. If you have images in your document, it may be possible to reduce your file size by reducing their resolutions. Please make sure to backup copies of your document and images before you make any changes. There is a compress image feature in Word via the Picture Tools tab (double-click on your image to bring up the image format tools).
