How do I record and transcribe audio of interviews or focus groups done via MS Teams?
Answer
You can use the Transcribe feature in MS Word Online and record the audio live during an MS Teams online meeting. Disconnect any headset that you are using, so the built-in computer mic on your laptop can pick up the sound from your speakers. You can also upload an audio recording to MS Word and select to transcribe.
To record audio:
1. Open MS Word online (sign in to word.office.com):
- Open a new document
- Click on the drop-down arrow on the Dictate button to select transcribe: Home>Dictate Button>Transcribe (via dropdown from the button)
2. You will see two options: Upload Audio or Start Recording.
- Click on Start Recording for live recordings or upload an audio file.
- Change language if applicable.
3. If you are recording a Teams meeting, it is imperative that you use the built-in mic and speakers. Your built-in mic will capture both your voice from the mic and any audio from the speakers (meeting attendees). So, disconnect any headsets before starting the recording. You can pause and resume recording. When ready to save, click on Save & Transcribe button.
4. Once the recording (or audio upload) has been completed, you will see the transcription outlined. This can take some time depending on the size of the audio file or recording session. Please note, you have max of 300 minutes of transcription uploads per month. The audio wav file is automatically saved to your OneDrive in the Transcription Folder.
5. Now, you can playback and edit the transcribed text, if needed.
6. Then, click on the Add to document and select if add to document with or without time stamps.
