How can I adjust line spacing in my assignment in MS Word e.g. double spacing

Answer

You can add additional line spacing if needed to your written assignment using MS Word such as double-spacing.

Line spacing using MS Word for your assignment is referring to the line spacing between the text. By default when you enter text in MS Word it's in the 'single' line spacing (and normal style). This spacing can be adjusted in MS Word to be double spacing. In Word, line spacing is  usually measured in multiples of whatever font size the paragraph is using. For example, if your using a 12 point font for the text in your paragraph. If you choose single line spacing, the space between lines will be 12 points. If you choose double spacing, that space between lines will be 24 points.

There are a couple of ways of doing thus:

  • You can modify the normal style and adjust the line spacing in the paragraph option, this will apply the double text to all your body text which is in the normal style. This FAQ link on how to use styles demonstrates how to modify a style e.g. normal style and where the option for line spacing is so you can select 'double-space'.
  • Alternatively you can in MS Word:
    • In the Home tab, select the paragraphs you need to adjust or add place your cursor on the paragraph that needs double spacing. Select 'Line and Paragraph spacing' and in the drop down select 2.0. The above method modifying the normal style will save you time as it will apply this automatically.
