Grammarly vs Microsoft Editor

Can I use Grammarly in the library?

Is there an equivalent to Grammarly that I can use to check my written work?

Answer

Grammarly

Grammarly is not available as an app on library computers or laptops. There is a free version of Grammarly which is a watered-down version of the premium version. The free version does not provide any built-in features for your desktop apps.

The free version is a cloud-based typing assistance that can be signed up for and it works via Grammarly’s browser extension as you write online. You can also copy & paste text into the online Grammarly dashboard to check written work. You can log in to your Grammarly account from any browser on campus or at home.

Mircosoft Editor

Microsoft Editor is like Grammarly but is available directly in Word as writing assistant feature and covers more than 20 languages. Editor helps catch misspellings and checks for grammar, capitalization, and punctuation errors. It also checks for clarity, conciseness, and formality. As with Grammarly, you can also add the Editor browser extension and check for grammar and spelling mistakes as you write online. As a student, you have access to the Editor via your DMU MS365 subscription.

Note: The Similarity Checker in Editor is Microsoft tool, and it is not the same as Turnitin. Please use with caution and note that this is not a text-matching checker that we use at DMU.
Word Online example

1. Click on Editor to open the Editor side panel.

2. In the example below, Editor has detected two spelling errors. Click on Spelling and it will highlight the word with suggestions.

3. Now click on Grammar and it will highlight the grammar error and provide a suggestion.
