MS Teams troubleshooting when joining Teams link or a Library Workshop Join Link

This also applies to all shared MS Teams Join links.

Answer

Library Workshop Teams Join Links

When you click on a Libary workshop Join link, it will open the MS Teams meeting link on your computer's default browser. You will then see an option to either continue via the web (browser mode) or via the Teams Desktop app (if installed).

If you are not able to connect after you have clicked to join the session, there may be a security setting on your computer that is preventing Teams from working. It could also be down to the type of device or browser that you are connecting from.

Mobile Phones & Tablets

Please note that mobile phones (android or iOS devices) may not be able to connect due to phone setting restrictions, updates missing, or the Teams app not being signed into correctly etc.

To make the best of online workshops, we recommend accessing the sessions from a laptop or desktop. We strongly advise against using a device with a small screen such as a phone, as this will restrict your engagement with teaching materials and activities. Moreover, please note some smartphones are not compatible with the platform used for online teaching at DMU, Microsoft Teams.

It is advisable to connect to any shared DMU MS Teams meeting links on a laptop or computer. If you wish to use a tablet or mobile, please ensure that you have signed in as a DMU student on the correct MS Teams app. If you connect via your browser on your mobile or tablet, ensure that you have 'accepted/allowed' camera and mic access when prompted by the browser. It is advisable to use Chrome or Edge instead of Firefox and Safari.

Trouble-shooting Q&A:

  • Did you connect on a mobile phone or tablet? Try switching to connecting via a laptop or desktop.
  • Are you on a Mac and/or using the Safari browser? Try using Chrome and also ensure that you have allowed MS Teams access to the camera and mic in the MAC security setting. It should prompt you when you connect to Teams for the first time via a browser, but sometimes you will need to enable access manually via the Privacy and Security setting.
  • If you are using a Windows laptop, did you connect via a browser or use the Teams Desktop app? Please note that there are two types of Teams apps on Windows. One is called Teams Chat and is pre-installed by Windows on your personal device. You cannot connect with this type of Teams app to our sessions. You will need to download the Institution MS Teams app (via your MS365 office subscription) to connect to DMU MS Teams.
  • Did you connect from a Chrome book? Please note that Chrome books are android operating system and will attempt to connect as a mobile app and not as a desktop app. It may also have the wrong type of Teams mobile app installed.

If you are still not able to connect, please contact the ITMS Helpdesk via 0116 250 6050 or itmsservicedesk@dmu.ac.uk
