How do I reference a health or corporate protocol, regulation or guideline in Harvard (Cite Them Right) style?

Answer

Protocols, regulations and guidelines relate to official procedures, rules and guidance from health, government and other corporate bodies – for example, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, NICE.

Use the following format

Author (Year) Title. Series or publication number (if given). Publishers.

If accessed online, include the DOI (Digital Object Identifier) or if this is not available, use the URL, followed by the date of access in the format (Accessed: 21 February 2018).

Example:

NICE (2024) Twin and triplet pregnancy. NG137. Available at: https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng137 (Accessed: 18 May 2024).

You can view examples on Cite Them Right (log-in required).

Please note that this guidance is based on Cite Them Right 13th edition and was updated in August 2025.  You may still see examples using the previous guidance from the 12th edition, where the place of publication is also included in the reference.
