How do I reference a PDF document I found online?

Answer

The guidance from Cite Them Right is that you should reference a PDF according to the type of material contained in the PDF i.e. look to see whether it fits into any of the source categories on Cite Them Right, such as a PDF of a book, a report, a journal article or a company report.  Use the Browse Categories menu at the top to decide if it fits into any of those categories:

It sometimes helps to look at the website page that includes the link to the PDF, rather than the direct link to the PDF file itself.  This can often help if details are missing for the source (such as the author or date of publication).

If you think the PDF does not fit in any of the categories listed on the Cite Them Right website, then you can use the template for a web page reference in your chosen referencing style, so the reader can see all the details of where you found it on the Web.
