How do I reference a journal article with an article number in Harvard (Cite Them Right) style?

Answer

Many journals are now only published online without being published in print. Some of those ‘online only’ journals choose to number their articles, giving each article an individual number.

Here is an example in Harvard (Cite Them Right) style:

Iacobellis, G. (2020) ‘COVID-19 and diabetes: can DPP4 inhibition play a role?’, Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice, 162, article 108125. Available at: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.diabres.2020.108125

There are examples for some other referencing styles on Cite Them Right.

Please note that this guidance is based on Cite Them Right 13th edition and was updated in August 2025.  You may still see examples using the previous guidance from the 12th edition, where the phrase 'article number' is used in the reference.
