Where do I find the information I need to create a full reference?

Answer

The full details of the source are required in the reference list and you should include as much information as you can.   These details are listed on Cite Them Right as the Citation Order:

Citation order for Print books

Finding these details depends on the type of source used.  For example:

  • For books you can look at the front pages if you have a physical copy, or search the library catalogue to find the details on the catalogue record.
  • For journal articles it’s usually at the top or bottom of the page if it’s in print or a PDF version.  You can also look for it on Library Search / the database where you found it or try Google Scholar.  Databases and search tools will usually include the bibliographic details required for a reference.  Just ensure that you have found the record for the exact version that you used!
  • For web pages check the top and bottom of the page, look for copyright information or click on any ‘about us’ information if you are unsure about the date or authorship of the web page.

If there is still some missing information then you can follow the guidance on Cite Them Right for missing information such as authors and dates.
