How do I reference a chapter in a book in Harvard (Cite Them Right) style?
Answer
If you are using a book which has an overall editor, and chapters are written by different authors, you may only want to refer to the chapter you have read. You then need to reference both the chapter and the book it appears in as follows:
Surname, Initial. (Year of publication) 'Title of chapter or section', in Initial. Surname (ed.) Title of book. Publisher, Page reference.
E.g.
Karim, R., Tretten, T. and Kumar, U. (2018) ‘eMaintenance’, in M. Pecht and M. Kang (eds) Prognostics and health management of electronics: fundamentals, machine learning, and the internet of things. John Wiley & Sons, pp. 559–587.
Please note that this guidance is based on Cite Them Right 13th edition and was updated in August 2025. You may still see examples using the previous guidance from the 12th edition, where the place of publication is also included in the reference.
